This course an introduction to the cultures and the ways of life-past and present of the various peoples of the world, dealing with the historical, geographical, social, psychological, religious, political and economic factors that underlie the development of the regions of the world and the peoples who inhabit them. The course will involve research, discussions, position papers and persuasive speeches.

Instructor Approval This course is a comprehensive study of the history and geography (political and physical) of the cultures and ways of life of the peoples of Western and Eastern Europe, Africa, the Middle East and North Africa, South Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. A review of the basic tools of geography will also be presented, and being able to navigate through an atlas will also be part of the course. We will be dealing with the people of each region historically, geographically, socially, and economically. The concept of the world as globally interdependent will be emphasized. This course is also designed to teach World History. The course will involve research, lecture/discussions, some position papers, video questions, and other methods of assessment. A special emphasis will be given to higher level thinking skills and the class will be taught at a higher level as well.

UNITED STATES HISTORY

This is a comprehensive study of American History in chronological order beginning with the first inhabitants in America and finishing with the present. We will concentrate on the period from Reconstruction on. It will take the students on a journey through time with stops in Colonial America, the Revolutionary war period, and the Constitutional Convention. The small nation in 1783 evolves into the great nation that we are today. The student will learn about the conflicts that developed along the way as well as new inventions, the labor movement and the fun times of the Roaring Twenties. The problems that we faced will also be studied. The Great Depression, Wars, and the counter-culture movements of yesterday and today will be examined. Finally we will look at the 1960s to the present and see how America has matured. The student will be given the opportunity to predict the future by using what they have gained during this course. Critical thinking skills will be used to the maximum.

Instructor Approval This course will deal with a comprehensive and detailed look at the specific topics, concepts, themes, and time periods of United States History from the beginnings to the present. The course will involve students in research, lecture/discussions, some position papers, and the use of other forms of assessment. A college style experience for students will be the framework for this course, as it will be taught at a higher level. Students may be able to earn college credit through Boise State University.
